US packaging firm MeadWestvaco (MWV) has inked a licensing agreement with design agency Burgopak for marketing the latter's medication adherence packaging.

Burgopak's package is said to boost patient's adherence to medication through communication and engagement. Based on patient insights, the design has provisions for a calendar and information leaflets.

MWV Healthcare secondary and adherence vice-president and managing director John Grinnell said: "This is a natural partnership of two businesses that have made a clear strategic commitment to improving medication adherence through packaging.

"The market for adherence packaging is growing as a result of the proven, positive impact it has on patients' medication taking behavior. This agreement with Burgopak enhances MWV's suite of adherence solutions."

The packaging is child resistant. The tray-based carrier fits with the requirement for blister materials, such as, cold form foil.

Burgopak managing director Rosie Reardon said: "Burgopak chose to work with MWV because of its recognized leadership in this space.

"We bring together our mutual packaging design expertise and commitment to improving patient health through better medication adherence."

Patient medication adherence is recognized as challenge globally, with an estimated 50% of patients not taking their medication as prescribed.
